As suppliers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNC machining<\/a> to the rail industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M-CNC<\/a> hone our processes to ensure energy-efficient production \u2013 without compromising on quality, performance, and delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How inefficient CNC machining impacts the environment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst CNC machining is known for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/what-is-precision-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incredible precision<\/a> and speed when it comes to manufacturing, its reliance on <strong>raw materials and electricity<\/strong> can negatively impact the environment when undertaken carelessly. Inefficient, energy-hungry CNC machining scales up when producing large, complex <strong>rail parts<\/strong> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/cnc-machining-for-bogie-and-suspension-components-what-to-consider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bogie and suspension components<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The negative impact of inefficient machining includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Material waste:<\/strong> The subtractive process of CNC machining generates scrap metal (swarf, offcuts, etc). Unless these processes are highly optimised, material waste builds up unnecessarily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy usage:<\/strong> CNC machines run powerfully and for extended periods, leading to high energy use. Manufacturers that don\u2019t upgrade their stock to more modern, energy-efficient machines increase their carbon footprint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chemical disposal: <\/strong>The chemicals contained in the cutting fluids and lubricants essential to CNC machining must be disposed of safely to avoid harming the local ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainable CNC machining for the rail industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CNC machining is the manufacturing method of choice for many rail companies. It provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/traceability-in-rail-manufacturing-how-erp-systems-enhance-accountability-and-auditability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">full traceability<\/a> across supply chains and ensures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/tight-tolerances-in-rail-machining-why-they-matter-and-how-we-meet-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tight tolerances<\/a> for rail parts are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With many rail companies increasingly taking steps to ensure a more <strong>sustainable future<\/strong>, CNC suppliers to the rail industry are adopting new machining processes and strategies to meet these environmentally conscious requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Reduction of material waste<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At M-CNC, we use strategic planning and production to ensure material waste is kept to a minimum. Our machines are integrated with advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/capabilities\/cad-cam-programming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAD\/CAM software<\/a>, and one of the many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-cad-cam-programming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advantages<\/a> of this software is the <strong>efficiency<\/strong> it brings to projects. All collaborators on a part can view and make design changes in real time, ensuring a part only goes into production once the design is perfected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also use an <strong>ERP system<\/strong> for real-time job and stock tracking across our company. This helps keep projects on track across our entire supply chain, lowering raw material use and internal material waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Energy-efficient machining<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst CNC machining has historically always been an electricity-hungry manufacturing method, modern machines are often equipped with <strong>energy-saving<\/strong> controls, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inverter-controlled motors<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Efficient energy management systems<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy-saving modes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At M-CNC we continually invest in our machine stock, improving our capacity for sustainable manufacturing. CAD\/CAM software integration and multi-axis machining also reduces cycle time on part manufacture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Scrap recycling and eco-friendly practices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recycling and reclaiming<\/strong> the scrap materials CNC machining produces also helps reduce the carbon footprint of rail part manufacture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using environmentally friendly cutting fluids and lubricants where possible is also important. These are usually made from <strong>biodegradable materials or plant-based oils<\/strong>, which will not harm the local ecosystem (but still need to be disposed of safely).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Right First Time quality control processes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important part of sustainable manufacturing is achieving <strong>Right First Time quality<\/strong>. Working towards this principle reduces rework and waste by ensuring parts meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/m-cnc-have-gained-joscar-and-risqs-registered-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high quality standards<\/a> demanded by the rail industry on the first attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the quality practices we use to ensure this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/first-article-inspection-fai-in-rail-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Article Inspection (FAI)<\/a>. Generally, this is done by inspecting the first part, or batch of parts, produced for an order to check they match the <strong>technical drawings<\/strong> and manufacturing specifications required. This identifies any potential production issues so they can be fixed ahead of time \u2013 saving significantly on wasted money and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. CMM measuring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another <strong>quality control <\/strong>practise M-CNC use to ensure Right First Time quality is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/capabilities\/cmm-measurement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMM measuring<\/a>. Our state-of-the-art Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) measure the physical geometry of parts to an incredibly high degree of accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We use CMM measuring to test that every part we machine meets the <strong>original intent<\/strong> of the design.
