Whilst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNC machining<\/a> is the most precise manufacturing method available, no part can be made 100% accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giving a part a specific tolerance gives a <strong>margin of error<\/strong> that the part can be manufactured within without compromising its function or safety. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/what-is-precision-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">precision engineers<\/a>, this is especially important in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/how-cnc-engineering-is-used-in-the-rail-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rail sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are tight tolerances given?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially <strong>tight tolerances<\/strong> for part manufacture are usually given when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two or more components are designed to <strong>fit or connect<\/strong> (\u201cmating parts\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The part is one component of a <strong>complex, intricate assembly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The part is <strong>safety-critical<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do we achieve tight tolerances?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M-CNC<\/a> we achieve tight tolerances in the machining of rail parts in several ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. CAD\/CAM programming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We use sophisticated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/capabilities\/cad-cam-programming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAD\/CAM software<\/a> at every stage of component manufacture and design. Integrated with our CNC machines, CAD (computer-aided design) software ensures every part we make is manufactured to an incredibly high degree of accuracy. A completed design is turned into <strong>machine language<\/strong>, which in turn directs the timing, cutting paths, and speed settings of the CNC machines that will be used to create the part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-cad-cam-programming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAD\/CAM programming<\/a> offers many <strong>advantages<\/strong> for the manufacture of railway parts. It enables unparalleled design flexibility and real time editing, simulation testing to ensure parts will behave as expected in extreme environments, prototyping, and streamlined, efficient workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. CMM inspection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/capabilities\/cmm-measurement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMM measurement<\/a> is a vital part of our <strong>quality inspection processes<\/strong>. Our industry-leading coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) also enable us to machine parts to the tight tolerances demanded by the rail industry. Testing parts in this way ensures there are no unexpected changes from the original design which could lead to unexpected quality issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Quality control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manufacture of components using precision engineering is critical to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.m-cnc.co.uk\/news\/how-precision-engineering-supports-safety-in-the-rail-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rail safety<\/a>.
